At the Art Museum of Myrtle Beach
Reynier Llanes a professional artist and educator who graduated from the school of art (Instrcutores de art) in Cuba is a scholarship recipient of an Artist in Residence Award with Jonathan Green Studios in Daniel Island, South Carolina . He has been working for the past two years creating a unique collection of paintings capturing his African-Cuban Diaspora heritage, culture, and traditions. Filtered throughout many of his representational paintings are depictions of ancient belief systems and myths based on a synthesis of Yoruba religions from Africa and Christian practices stressing love, belonging, family, and spirituality. Each of the paintings on paper by Reynier Llanes reflects a mastery of an unusual medium which is espresso coffee. He relates that he likes to use the “spirit of the magical coffee bean” to apply a range of brown clay tones to create a mood and atmosphere to allow his subjects to a express a positive yet enigmatic relationship to life.
